Co-designing the next 25 years whilst celebrating and learning from the journey so far
The UK’s offshore renewable energy sector has come a long way – from early demonstration projects to becoming a core part of our energy system. It’s important to celebrate how much has been achieved in a relatively short period of time. But, as a sector, we are naturally focused on what comes next - how we can accelerate progress to reach Net Zero and mitigate the worst effects of the climate crisis.
The next phase of growth requires us to build on this progress at pace - increasing the scale of device deployment, including in deeper waters, improving consenting processes, whilst growing the workforce and supply chain needed to support a rapidly expanding sector. This will require much more than business as usual.
During the 13th Partnership for Research in Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMaRE) Conference, an interactive workshop was held as - A Deep Dive into the Past, Present, and Future of Marine Renewable Energy. Held in June 2026 it was co-hosted by The Crown Estate and Supergen ORE Hub.
The workshop brought together researchers working across marine renewable energy with stakeholders from The Crown Estate and Supergen ORE Hub for an open and analytical discussion of the challenges and opportunities facing the offshore renewable energy sector. Together, participants worked to explore practical pathways towards solutions in priority areas.
The results of these discussions have since been analysed and summarised in a new report. The report highlights the need for coordinated action across skills, infrastructure, data, investment, environmental stewardship and decision-making.
