“I did not know that the sea also makes electricity. That is so cool.”
– Pearl, age 9

To those driving the development of offshore renewables, here’s a small reminder that the next generation think this type of energy is really exciting! It’s natural for us to get caught up in the technical challenges and pressure to accelerate towards crucial targets. But we can sustain the momentum by reminding ourselves why this matters and the great potential it holds for the next generation.

Throughout the year, we take our demonstration water tank to public events to show how wind, wave, and tidal energy can be harnessed. It’s always rewarding to share the UK's potential for offshore renewable energy in a clean energy mix - and to tell young people that these emerging industries need future scientists and engineers.

The questions we receive from the young people are often curious, broad-ranging and sometimes surprising! But always a reminder of how awe-inspiring these technologies are.

Public concern about climate change is high with 64% of people believing Britain should be one of the most ambitious countries in the world when it comes to tackling climate change (Britain Talks Climate, 2024). We see that in our conversations too. Many are pleased to learn about the development of offshore renewables, but surprised to learn the UK is a global leader in the sector.

That tells us something important: there’s still a huge opportunity to raise awareness about these growing industries in the UK. So keep up the great work building the sector, and let’s keep inspiring the next generation to be part of it!
