About the webinar

This webinar explores the application of Engineering Wake Models to wind-farm wakes, focusing on the assessment of buffer zones, ecological impact, and performance evaluation. It covers Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of atmospheric flows, examining how varying atmospheric conditions affect wind-farm wake behavior.

Diego Araya:     Engineering Wake Models applied to wind-farm wakes:

Assessment of buffer zones, informing ecological assessment and evaluation of capabilities.

Tim Stallard:     LES of atmospheric flows and wind-farm wakes

Differing atmospheric conditions and scaling up to future wind farms.

About the Speakers

Speaker: Professor Tim Stallard

Presentation topic: LES of atmospheric flows and wind-farm wakes

Professor Tim Stallard is a Reader at the University of Manchester in offshore renewable energy with a particular focus on unsteady loading of systems within arrays (e.g. tidal stream systems, wave devices and wind turbines) and with interests in the assessment of economic viability.

Tim has been Principal or Co-Investigator on several major marine energy projects with net value of >£3M, including EU FP7 Equimar, the ETI PerAWaT, UK-China EPSRC-NEWTON ALLT-Tidal, ETI ReDAPT and the EPSRC Challenge project X-MED. His research also addresses floating body hydrodynamics with interests in wave energy arrays through EU FP7 WECWakes and wave device innovations EPSRC STEP-WEC.

Diego Araya

Presentation topic: Engineering Wake Models applied to wind-farm wakes

Diego Araya is a mechanical engineer with over 5 years of experience in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and turbulence modeling, alongside 3 years in project engineering within consultancy. Holding a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and an MSc in Thermal Power and Fluid Engineering, Diego has a strong foundation in fluid dynamics, power generation, and renewable energy systems.

With expertise in commercial CFD software such as ANSYS Fluent, STAR CCM+, and the open-source platform OpenFOAM, he is proficient in coding and frequently utilizes C++, Python, and Matlab for feature development, workflow automation, and enhancing productivity.
