Our team of researchers enjoyed meeting with young people and their families at the Devon County Show and sharing their enthusiasm for marine energy. We took part in the University of Plymouth’s exhibition in the Ocean Explorers Tent, showcasing cutting-edge marine research at the University.
Our team of PhD researchers took along the mini wave tank - a scaled-down version of the COAST Laboratory - to demonstrate wave energy conversion. The full-scale version is a fantastic facility which allows students, researchers and industry to carry out testing in different wave conditions, including the testing of wave and tidal energy conversion technologies. The mini version offers a fun, hands-on learning experience for young people to learn how wave energy is converted into electricity. Using a plunger, visitors could generate waves in the tank and watch as a sequence of lights turn on - they can play with the frequency of the waves to try to make different colour lights turn on. The wave tank proves to be a popular activity at our outreach events and is an interactive, visual way to learn about wave energy conversion.
We hope Supergen ORE Hub activities such as this event spark interest in the STEM subjects, raise awareness about these innovative offshore renewable technologies and encourage future careers in this exciting and vital sector.
