Supergen ORE Hub Seventh Early Career Researchers Forum
About the ECR Forum
As part of the 2024 Annual Assembly, the Supergen ORE Hub hosted an Early Career Researchers (ECR) Forum on Tuesday 23 April 2024 at the University of Plymouth, followed by an evening networking reception at the National Marine Aquarium. The Supergen ORE Hub ECR Community aims to connect ECRs with more senior researchers, in the UK and internationally, to create a diverse and supportive community that nurtures the next generation of ORE research leaders. These Forums serve as platforms for ECRs to convene, exchange ideas, and expand their professional networks.
The ECR Forum featured insightful speakers from both industry and academia, engaging in discussions on career advancement in offshore renewable energy, fostering industry collaboration, and accessing Supergen ORE Hub ECR Research Funding. This was a useful opportunity to hear advice from those further established in their careers and gain a wide range of perspectives from each of the members of the panels. Some of the discussion gave specific insight on how to build successful Academic-Industry partnerships and that even a small collaboration such a Letter of Support can grow into a long-lasting partnership with direct funding support over many years.
Additionally, ECRs received valuable training on pitching ideas and collaborated in group exercises to pitch research project concepts. Each group selected a challenge from a list of options and had 1 hour to create a proposal on how this problem could be addressed. Despite taking place at the end of a day of talks, this session was lively and the pitches produced were fantastic - detailed, ambitious and creative! The activity was a great example of how researchers from a mix of disciplines can collaborate to solve a problem.
ECR community members had the opportunity to present their research during the ECR Forum and Annual Assembly through research posters, abstracts and poster pitches. You can view the full book of posters and abstracts here.
The ECR poster presentations were excellent, demonstrating the calibre and skills of the ECRs. It is quite an achievement to successfully convey a body of work in just 2-minutes.
The top three ECR posters were announced during the closing session of the Assembly. The winning posters were:
- 1st prize - Dr Jiaxin Chen (University of Plymouth) "Estimating Wind Using Wave Buoy Measurement: A case study in the Celtic Sea Global Challenge Research Fellow in ORE"
- 2nd prize - Abigail Bateman, (University of Bristol)"Soil Reaction Curves for the Response of Monopile Tip in Clay"
- 3rd prize - Henry Thomas (University of Plymouth) "Thermal Boundary Layer around a Partially Buried Pipe in Oscillating Flow"
