About the project

A fundamental blocker is the rapidly increasing unplanned offshore outages due to premature cable failures. To assess this risk, an empirical investigation is proposed to directly observe water and electrical treeing interaction in cable insulation. Observing these processes in-situ will identify mitigation measures that can be developed to ensure the average expected economic asset life of >45 years. This research supports and aligns with UK’s goals to increase offshore wind to 50 GW whilst delivering 18 GW of electricity interconnector capacity by 2030.
