We enjoyed a few days at the Devon County Show (18 – 20 May) near Exeter showcasing recent developments in offshore renewable energy research and encouraging visitors to consider a career in engineering.
We were there as part of the University of Plymouth’s exhibition on Innovation Avenue, showcasing cutting-edge research at the University. We took along the mini wave tank which is a scaled-down version of the COAST Laboratory to demonstrate wave energy conversion. The full-scale version is a fantastic facility which allows students, researchers and industry to carry out testing in different wave conditions, including the testing of wave and tidal energy conversion technologies.
We enjoyed teaching children (and grown ups too!) how the motion of the waves is converted into an electrical current, turning on the lights on the device. Over the 3 days, we spoke to over 300 people and met some of our youngest engineers and scientists!
